Opportunities & Grants

A list of opportunities and grants available for businesses in Nottingham looking to incorporate green practices.

When we started digging, we found an abundance of opportunities and support out there for businesses in Nottingham. In fact, it started to feel a little overwhelming! So we asked Nottingham BID partners and organisations to share information with us about the support available to you. We’ve trimmed the information down into bite-size pieces for you to chew on… get stuck in!

Green Healthy City

Nottingham BID are proud to present Green Healthy City, a campaign that will provide Nottingham businesses and its citizens with accessible information on how to become more environmentally sustainable. The campaign supports Nottingham City Council's goal to be the first carbon neutral city in the UK, something they, and we, aim to achieve by 2028 through the CN2028 agenda.

Nottingham BID have created two web resources, one for business leaders that will sit here on the Nottingham BID website, and a public facing resource that will sit on our It's In Nottingham website. We aim to create the go-to resources for everything 'green' that is happening in our city and these will support the Nottingham City Council CN2028 agenda.

We encourage your organisation or business to get in touch if:

- You have an initiative that you'd like us to share, from carbon reduction tools to educational programmes, from advice on recycling to sustainability focused Facebook groups

- You’re from a Nottingham city centre business who would make a good case study to help inspire others

*Please note that we are not looking for products (such as re-use coffee cups) at this time.

To get involved, please complete this form. Please upload any imagery using the link on the form or email amy@nottinghambid.com with the article title in the subject box. If you have a question, please contact amy@nottinghambid.com

Green Rewards

Nottingham is aiming to be the first city in the UK to be carbon neutral by 2028 and Nottingham City Council are looking for your help as one of our local environmentally minded businesses to encourage and educate Nottingham city residents to reduce their carbon footprint and live more sustainably and play their part in this crucial agenda.

Nottingham City Council is working with engagement specialists Jump to develop an app called Green Rewards. The app encourages behaviour change across 6 themes/challenges:

- Travel

- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

- Energy and Carbon Reduction

- Get involved/Community

- Purchasing and Consumption

- Nature

City residents will earn points by completing a number of environmentally friendly challenges. At the end of each month the resident with the most points will be rewarded with a voucher to the value of £20 or more. In addition, everyone else will be entered into a prize draw to win the second £20 voucher.

Here’s how you can help and be part of this exciting and beneficial initiative. We are asking businesses, like yours, to donate or fund vouchers for goods and/or services from your business to a value of at least 1 or more which the top scorer or the prize draw could receive. In return, your company will receive promotion across 3 platforms: 1) in the app itself, 2) in the app newsletter and 3) as part of Nottingham City Council’s general promotion of the app.

Remember the aim of the donated or funded voucher is to help change residents behaviour to live more sustainably, PLUS your company will benefit via a city wide promotional campaign across various platforms.

Many thanks in advance of your environmentally-friendly contribution!

Please see attached some additional information

For any questions please email climatechange@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

Discounted NCT bus travel through staff travel schemes with organisations

Nottingham City Transport is the city's largest public transport provider, with a comprehensive network of services operating throughout the city, seven days a week.

NCT operates one of the greenest bus fleets in the UK, with all buses meeting the most stringent emission standards of Euro VI. This has been achieved by operating the world's largest fleet of bio-gas double deck buses (120 and 23 more to come next year) and retrofitting the young diesel fleet with an exhaust treatment system that reduces their emissions by 90%.

NCT, in partnership with the City Council, is now developing plans to convert all single decks to electric, further reducing emissions.

As an award winning operator - the only one in the UK to win UK Bus Operator of the Year five times - and with three Top National Bus Drivers, NCT provides a high quality service to the City.

NCT is keen to work with businesses to offer discounted travel to employees through employee travel schemes. These include options for people attending their place of work on most days of the week, part time employees or people working a combination of in the workplace and home.

Sustainability and Inclusive Leadership (SAIL)

Sustainability and the climate crisis are becoming an area of focus for many people across the world in both their personal and professional lives, and it will have a very real impact on the economic landscape.

NTU's Sustainability and Inclusive Leadership (SAIL) course explores the global climate crisis, the very real impact that this will have on the economic landscape, and how important it is for businesses to be more sustainable as they work towards COVID-19 recovery.

Participants will consider personal values, ethical decision-making and health and wellbeing, before taking a more focused look at sustainability through the lens of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate action and carbon literacy.

The course also looks at the circular economy – an economic system emphasising minimal waste through re-use, sharing, repaid and recycling – and the ‘doughnut economy’ – a visual framework for sustainable development.

Ideal for your team's professional development, this course has been accredited by NTU, and participants will receive 10 credits towards a Level 4 (degree level) qualification.

You will also develop an action plan for your business, and upon being successful in your assessment, you will receive a full certificate issued by the Carbon Literacy Trust.

Please note: To be eligible to enrol on this course, you must be an employee of a small or medium-sized business that is based in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham or Nottinghamshire (D2N2).

Accelerating Reduction in Carbon (ARC)

The ARC project aims to help SMEs located in Greater Nottingham to decarbonise by providing a support service offering carbon reduction advice and an associated grant programme to enable them to reduce their carbon emissions.

Part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. It aims to accelerate companies onto the next stage of growth through the introduction of energy and resource efficiency measures and the reduction of operating costs, leading to increased productivity.

The project supports the reduction of carbon by businesses largely through the improvement of energy performance of buildings and production processes.

The project can also support broader decarbonisation activities by businesses such as resource efficiency and ‘smart’ energy applications. This complements the more ‘traditional’ activities which improve energy performance such as LED lighting, improved insulation and heating/cooling systems, and production of renewable energy.

ARC is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and support from the project is available until June 2023.

Petrol shortage? No problem! Try an electric van

The Electric Van Experience (EVE) is a unique opportunity for Nottingham-based businesses to test drive a range of electric vans.

With the Government ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles brought forward to 2030, we want to support businesses to make the switch to electric vehicles. Not only are they more environmentally friendly, but they’re cheaper to run and maintain too.

We’re offering businesses, as well as voluntary and public sector organisations, in the city the chance to try one of 50 electric vans to suit their needs, including provision of a charge point at the business premises.
